Department of Economic Security
The TAA and NAFTA TAA programs are administered by the Employment and Training Administration
of the U.S. Department of Labor. TAA is for workers who have lost their jobs or
have had their hours reduced due to increased foreign trade or imports throughout
the world. NAFTA TAA program provides assistance to workers who have lost their
jobs or have had their hours reduced due to increased imports from or a shift in
production to Canada and/or Mexico. A company may apply for and be determined eligible
under both programs; however, each employee may only choose to receive benefits
from one program.
A petition must be submitted to the U.S. Department of labor for a company to be
considered for eligibility under either program. Three or more individual employees,
a union, or an employer representative may submit this petition. Once the company
is certified as eligible under TAA or the NAFTA TAA program, its employees must
apply individually for benefits obtain suitable employment.
These services include:
- Testing
- Counseling
- Training (up to 104 weeks)
- Job Search, relocation, transportation, and subsistence allowances
- Job placement assistance
- Weekly income support.
