Community Nutrition Education Program
Intervention services are provided to improve and promote the nutritional status
of Greenlee County residents. Services offered include nutrition education and information
on the 5-A-Day Program to increase intake of fruits and vegetables for 3rd graders,
and for adults in the community. This is part of the national 5-A-Day Program and
stresses Arizona grown produce.
Women, Infants, & Children (WIC) Program
WIC is a special supplemental nutrition program for women, infants and children.
Services include nutritional and bio-chemical assessment to determine health risks,
assistance with obtaining nutritious food packages, nutrition education and counseling,
and referrals to other pertinent programs. Education is provided on nutrition and
breastfeeding.
Pregnant and post-partum women, infants and children up to age five are screened
and assessed as to their nutritional risk, income level and residency. There is
no charge for these services.
Physical Activity Program (PLAY Program)
P.L.A.Y. (Promoting Lifetime Activity for Youth) is a classroom-based program targeting
grades 4th- 8th that is offered to schools statewide. It is a three step, teacher-directed
program designed to promote 60 minutes of daily, independent physical activity in
youth.
Implementation of the P.L.A.Y. program began in 1996 in twelve counties. Since then,
each year, P.L.A.Y. has been implemented in approximately 160 schools, reaching
24,000 students and 900 teachers yearly.
